Sliding Glass or
Hebeschiebe?

Anyone looking to bring large glass surfaces together to connect indoor and outdoor space usually comes across two options: the classic sliding glass system, and the German-named Hebeschiebe, or lift-and-slide, system. This system goes by different names in different parts of the world. In Spanish it's known as "corredera elevable", in Italian as "alzante scorrevole", and in French as "porte levante coulissante", but they're all built on the same basic principle. This guide compares the sliding glass system and the Hebeschiebe system in terms of profile structure, glass thickness, insulation, and cost.

What Is a Sliding Glass System

Sliding glass is a closure system in which glass panels slide horizontally along a rail, passing in front of or behind each other. Its profiles are made from aluminium without a thermal break, meaning there's no barrier inside the profile that cuts off heat transfer between the inside and outside. In standard sliding glass systems, single-glazed thickness is standard at 8 mm and 10 mm, and insulated glass thickness at 20 mm and 24 mm. The system usually consists of a larger number of relatively small panels, which makes it practical for narrow balconies and terraces.

What Is a Hebeschiebe (Lift-and-Slide) System

Hebeschiebe, also known as a lift-and-slide system, first lifts the sash a few millimetres, then slides it along the rail with no friction, and lowers it back down to seat it against the seals when closing. Thanks to this mechanism, even very heavy and large glass panels can be moved with ease. In Hebeschiebe systems, the profile has a thermal break, meaning it contains a barrier, usually made of polyamide or a similar material, that cuts the thermal bridge. The system usually consists of 1 fixed and 1 moving panel, and the panel sizes are noticeably larger than in a sliding glass system. The glass used is also thicker: many manufacturers treat 20-24 mm insulated glass as the starting point, and in some systems this thickness can go up to 39-51 mm.

Panel Structure and Size Difference

The most obvious difference between the two systems shows up in the number and size of the panels. In sliding glass, the opening is closed with a larger number of relatively small panels, which slide past each other and stack up in one corner. In a Hebeschiebe system, one fixed panel and one moving panel are usually enough, which creates a much larger, uninterrupted glass surface. To carry large, heavy panels, Hebeschiebe systems use steel rails and heavy-duty roller assemblies, and in some models the load capacity for a single sash can reach 300-400 kilograms.

Insulation Comparison

When it comes to insulation, the Hebeschiebe system is well ahead. The thermal-break profile, thicker glass, and the sash seating fully against the seals when closed all significantly improve heat, sound, and water insulation compared to standard sliding glass. In the sliding glass system, because the profile has no thermal break and the glass is thinner, insulation stays at a level provided by pile weatherstripping along the sash edges. In spaces used all year round, where heating costs matter, this difference turns into a significant advantage over time.

Cost Comparison

The sliding glass system is more economical than the Hebeschiebe system because it uses a profile without a thermal break, thinner glass, and lighter hardware. In the Hebeschiebe system, components such as the thermal-break profile, thick glass, steel rails, and heavy-duty rollers push the cost up. If budget is the priority and the space has a narrow opening, the sliding glass system is a sufficient solution. For those who want to close a wide opening with an uninterrupted, large glass surface, and do so with superior insulation, the Hebeschiebe system is the more suitable choice.

Which System Should Be Chosen in Which Situation

For narrow balconies and terraces, projects with a limited budget, and seasonally used spaces, the sliding glass system is a practical and economical choice. For wide garden or terrace openings, spaces used all year round, and projects that want a large, uninterrupted glass surface, the Hebeschiebe system delivers a stronger result in terms of both insulation and aesthetics. Both systems perform reliably for many years when installed correctly; the choice should be based on the size, climate, and budget of the space.
