Two of the main ways to make an outdoor space usable all year round are installing a fixed veranda system or choosing a movable, motorised glass roof system. Both are solutions frequently found in conservatory, terrace, restaurant and villa projects. However, their working logic, cost structures and maintenance requirements differ considerably. In this guide, both systems are compared in terms of technical features, safety, insulation performance, cost and maintenance load.
A veranda is a fixed structure that sits outside the home but is used as if it were an indoor space. It's a complete unit made up of an aluminium frame, a fixed glass roof on top, and a glazed facade on the sides. There are three main types on the market: the classic veranda, the non-sloped veranda and the thermal-break veranda system. What these three systems share is that the roof isn't movable, meaning it doesn't open or close. Because it contains no moving mechanism, the system can largely run maintenance-free.
A motorised glass roof system is a movable structure formed by mounting 3 or more glass panels on a rail. In the market, this system goes by different names, such as automatic glass roof systems, movable glass roof, movable glass roof systems, opening glass roof systems or retractable glass roof systems, but they all work on the same basic logic. When the panels are retracted with the help of a motor, the space opens up to the sky; when rain, snow or wind arrives, they close again to provide full protection. Being controlled by remote control, a wall switch or a smart home app is the most practical aspect of this system. In models equipped with rain and wind sensors, the panels can even close automatically while the user isn't at home.
In both systems, safety depends on the glass package used. The most preferred combination in the industry is an insulated glass unit with a total thickness of 24 mm: a 6 mm tempered outer pane, a 10 mm argon-filled air gap in the middle, and an 8 mm-thick inner pane made of 4+4 mm laminated tempered glass. This combination is safe for both systems when installed correctly. The real risk arises when cheap, single-glazed thin glass is used. The fact that the glass is attached to a moving mechanism in a motorised glass roof doesn't create a significant safety difference, as long as quality rails, motors and accessories are used. In a veranda system, since the glass is fixed, there's hardly any part that needs checking besides the seals.
Insulation performance is directly related to the thickness of the glass package in both systems. The thicker the glass package, the better the insulation, and this rule applies equally to both motorised glass roofs and verandas. In veranda systems using a thermal-break aluminium profile, the reduction in heating and cooling costs is at least 60 percent. In motorised glass roof systems, because the profile contains moving parts, the same level of thermal break can't always be applied. This is why motorised glass roof systems carry a small insulation disadvantage compared to fixed systems. In regions with intense sun, choosing Low-E coated glass is almost essential for both systems. The purpose of this type of glass is to reflect solar radiation back rather than letting it in, reducing the "magnifying glass effect". Both systems can be supported with additional shading accessories, such as a motorised zip screen, when needed.
In terms of initial investment cost, a veranda system is a noticeably more economical option than a motorised glass roof. As a general rule, the cost per square metre of a motorised glass roof system is around 4 times higher than that of a fixed veranda system. Most of this difference doesn't come from the glass, but from automation components such as the aluminium profile, motor, rail, remote control, sensors and special packaging. This difference is also the price of the extra functionality the motorised system offers, namely the ability to turn the space into a fully open-air area within seconds. There are also low-budget motorised glass roof options on the market, but these are also the riskiest systems; those using thin, single-glazed glass carry a serious injury risk in the event of breakage. If budget is limited and the space will only be used during certain months, a classic veranda system is generally a more sensible starting point.
The biggest difference between the two systems shows up not so much in the initial investment cost but in the annual maintenance load. Since there are no moving parts in a veranda system, maintenance needs are low. A visual check of the EPDM seals around the glass once a year is generally enough. Because these seals aren't attached to a moving mechanism, they aren't subject to constant mechanical stress, which means they last longer compared to a motorised glass roof. In a motorised glass roof system, the situation is the opposite. The rail and mechanism need to be cleaned and lubricated at regular intervals. Even more critical are the seals: in a system that opens and closes constantly, the EPDM seals need to be checked not once a year, but at regular intervals. Hardening or cracking can occur in the seals due to sun exposure and constant mechanical pressure. If these seals wear out or start to come apart, water can leak in from the corners of the glass panels or from the points where the rails meet the gutter. Replacing a seal requires removing the glass panels, so it isn't a simple repair, it's a detailed procedure that amounts to partially reinstalling the system. This makes the motorised glass roof system noticeably more demanding to keep track of than a veranda system.
For users who mainly plan to use the space closed and want low maintenance costs, a veranda system is the more sensible choice. For users who want to turn the space into a fully open-air area often, have a larger budget, and will keep up with regular maintenance, a motorised glass roof system is the right investment. A motorised system is visually far more striking and makes your space look considerably more stylish and valuable. As long as it's properly maintained, a motorised glass roof system is a solution that runs trouble-free for years and completely transforms how the space is used. If budget and maintenance discipline allow, a motorised glass roof system should be preferred. Otherwise, a veranda system is the more practical choice.
